happens, is certainly alarming. This indicates that there is no interest in the existence of an independent body, even formally, - this is how GYLA Chairwoman Nona Kurdovanidze responds to the fact that the Special Investigation Service is being abolished, and after its abolition, it will be transferred to the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor General's Office.
On the other hand, as Kurdovanidze noted, the Special Investigation Service was dysfunctional.
“The Special Investigation Service was created with the aim of independently investigating crimes committed by law enforcement officers, but for years we have seen that this service was dysfunctional and could not fulfill its mission and mandate. So far, not a single case has been investigated. The decision, which institutionally implies the abolition of this service, if it finally happens, is certainly alarming. This indicates that there is no interest in having a separate, independent body, even formally, that would investigate crimes that were under the jurisdiction of this service with a special mandate,” Kurdovanidze notes.
The Special Investigation Service is being abolished. As InterpressNews was told by the Investigation Service itself, after its abolition, it will be transferred to the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
“We confirm that the Special Investigation Service will join the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia. Additional details will be made public after a legislative initiative is submitted to the Bureau of the Parliament of Georgia, which will explain in detail the need for and forms of changes,” the Special Investigation Service told InterpressNews.
In 2022, after the abolition of the State Inspectorate, which was headed by Londa Toloraia, two agencies were created in its place - the Special Investigation Service and the Personal Data Protection Service.
The mandate of the Special Investigation Service was to combat ill-treatment.
The agency investigated crimes committed by law enforcement officials.
