"The issues are being returned to the Prosecutor’s Office — matters that were already under its jurisdiction — and there is nothing particularly special or remarkable about this," stated Davit Matikashvili, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, in an interview with journalists.
According to him, "the real functions of such [special investigative] services belong precisely to the Prosecutor’s Office."
"The constitutional provision tells us that constitutional bodies are only those which are meant to handle such activities exclusively. At the time, there was somewhat of an imposed situation and notion that such special agencies had to be created — whereas, in fact, the actual functions of these services are within the Prosecutor’s Office. So — nothing special, this matter is simply being corrected. The Prosecutor’s Office is regaining the cases that were already within its purview, and there’s nothing extraordinary or exceptional happening here," said Matikashvili.
For context, a legislative package that envisages the abolishment of the Special Investigation Service has been initiated in Parliament. According to the bill initiated by MPs from the "Georgian Dream" party, the law "On the Special Investigation Service" will be declared void. Accordingly, the Special Investigation Service, along with the positions of its head, first deputy, and deputy, will be eliminated.
