Jeanne Shaheen: The arrest of Zurab Japaridze is appalling and unjust – such actions confirm that Congress must stand with the Georgian people against the suppression of democratic institutions by “Georgian Dream"

The arrest of Georgian opposition politician Zurab Japaridze is appalling and unjust – this was written by U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Party), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on the social platform X.

“The detention of Georgian opposition politician, Zurab Japaridze is appalling and unjust. Actions like this prove, yet again, that Congress should stand with the Georgian people in the face of the Georgian Dream government's crackdown on democratic institutions," wrote Jeanne Shaheen.

She stated that she will always support the Georgian people in their fight for democracy.

“I will always stand with the brave Georgian people in their fight for democracy, and I am proud to lead the bipartisan effort in Congress – the ‘MEGOBARI Act’ – to support their Euro-Atlantic aspirations,” Jeanne Shaheen said.
