The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced that Shaikha Al Nowais has been nominated as the first woman for the position of Secretary-General.

According to protocol, the Executive Council selected Shaikha Al Nowais as the next Secretary-General, who, if approved, will take office from January 2026.

Her candidacy will be submitted for approval at the UN Tourism General Assembly.

It is noted that in the organization’s 50-year history, Al Nowais, a representative of the United Arab Emirates, could become the first female Secretary-General.

Zurab Pololikashvili has served as the Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization for two terms. He was approved for his second term in 2021, and his tenure will end on December 31, 2025.

Information about the Georgian government’s withdrawal of Pololikashvili’s candidacy surfaced on May 14. The government administration stated that Pololikashvili’s candidacy was initially put forward by the Georgian authorities but was later withdrawn.

Additionally, the government administration announced that Georgia will support the candidate nominated by the United Arab Emirates for the position of Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization.
