"No one is passing a law against anyone – in any country, the public has the right to receive unassessed and objective information from journalists," – said the "People’s Power" MP, Guram Macharashvili, when speaking to journalists about the enforcement of the Law on Broadcasting.
According to him, society should evaluate for itself whether the information is good or bad.
"As for the Law on Broadcasting – no one is adopting a law against anyone. Whatever regulations are written into the law, the media outlet will follow them and deliver information objectively to the public. Media outlets are free to provide their interpretations through various programs, guest invitations, and so on – that is not restricted.
When it comes to delivering information, in any country, the public has the right to receive unassessed and objective information from journalists. The public can then evaluate it on its own – whether it’s good or bad. That’s how it works in all normal countries, including the United Kingdom," – said Macharashvili.
Asked what would change if critical media referred to them with legitimate terminology, Macharashvili responded:
"What will change is that we’ll have correctly informed citizens.
That’s the principle of democracy – what’s so hard to understand? That’s how the entire civilized world works. God forbid, why would I need legitimacy from TV Pirveli?
What’s being argued is that evaluative language should not be used, because society has the right to receive correct information. Then it can decide on its own what is right and what is wrong,"* – said Macharashvili.
For context: According to TV Pirveli, Formula, and Mtavari Arkhi, Georgian Dream has filed a complaint with the Communications Commission. Formula reports that a Georgian Dream representative has accused them of violating certain provisions of the Law on Broadcasting. Reportedly, the issue is with terms such as: “illegitimate parliament,” “so-called parliament speaker,” “oligarch’s MP,” “regime’s city court,” “judge serving the clan,” and so on.
