Rasa juknevičienė: The report on Georgia supports new fair elections, imposition of sanctions against the regime, and calls for the release of political prisoners and a review of EU support

It is regrettable that in its annual report, the European Parliament should assess Georgia as a candidate country not as progress, but as a huge decline from a democratic state, a leader of the European Partnership countries, to a brutal autocracy, - MEP Rasa juknevičienė stated at the meeting of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, at which the draft report on Georgia was adopted.

“This is an example of how a country can be taken over from within by a pro-Russian government without firing a single shot. The report discusses the rigged elections, the ruling party’s decision to block the EU, the detention of journalists and opposition politicians, and attacks on the EU and its representatives. The report supports new fair elections, the imposition of sanctions against the regime, and calls for the release of political prisoners and a review of EU support,” the MEP noted.
