MEP Hans Neuhoff: The draft report on Georgia is politically biased

The draft report on Georgia is politically biased, said Hans Neuhoff, a member of the European Parliament representing the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group, at a meeting of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, where the committee members approved the draft report on Georgia.

“I would like to state a minority position on behalf of the ESN group. Allow me to present three points. We reject the fifth point of the draft, which calls for the imposition of personal sanctions without prior legal procedures, which violates the fundamental principles of the rule of law and individual rights. Moreover, the extension of such sanctions to family members constitutes a form of collective punishment, which is a clear violation of the fundamental rights of the European Union and international legal norms.

We reject the eighth point, which calls on the European Union not to recognize the democratically elected government of Georgia, which is a clear violation of the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.

We reject the tenth point, which seeks to circumvent the principle of unanimity of the European Union in foreign policy decisions, which undermines the legal norms of the European Union. Thus, we categorically reject the Commission’s draft report on Georgia, the text of which is clearly politically biased. It also contains several provisions that are legally and institutionally unacceptable under EU and international law,” said Hans Neuhoff.

For information, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee approved the draft report on Georgia with amendments by 55 votes.
