Sanctioned individuals are calling the European Union with questions like: “What happened to my assets, my house in Spain, my child who is studying in Belgium?” This was stated by MEP Nacho Sánchez Amor.
According to him, the only leverage that exists is personal sanctions.
“Georgian Dream is following the authoritarian playbook in detail—perhaps with some innovations—but it’s shocking to see how a country can find itself in such a position in just a few months, especially when the horizon was set during the [election] campaign.
Georgian Dream has said they are eliminating the opposition. They don’t openly say they are establishing one-party rule, but in practice, that is exactly what they are doing—through laws, practices, and narratives…
They are isolated, and rest assured, we are receiving the same message from the European External Action Service and colleagues in the European Commission: the only thing that can stop this is personal sanctions.
The only thing they’ve responded to is this—people are calling, asking: ‘What happened to my assets, my house in Spain, my child who is studying in Belgium?’
And these [sanctioned] individuals are calling the EU, NGOs, asking how they can be removed from the [sanctions] list,” the MEP said.
