Nika Gvaramia, leader of the "Coalition for Change," was arrested. Law enforcement officers handcuffed Gvaramia near the Rustavi Penitentiary No. 12, where the opposition politician had gone voluntarily.
Prior to his arrest, Gvaramia called 112 after arriving at the Rustavi prison and requested a patrol himself. The patrol officers who arrived at the scene stated that information about Gvaramia’s whereabouts was "transferred to the relevant service."
"The oligarchy must fall! Glory to Georgia!" Gvaramia declared after being handcuffed.
As a reminder, during today’s court hearing, the prosecution requested that the preventive measure imposed on Nika Gvaramia—a 30,000 GEL bail—be replaced with imprisonment. The judge granted the prosecution’s request, and Gvaramia’s bail was replaced with detention. Gvaramia did not appear at the hearing held today at the Tbilisi City Court.
Additionally, Gvaramia was summoned to provide explanations to the Temporary Investigative Commission of the Georgian Parliament, where he also did not appear. In connection with this, he faces charges under Article 349 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to "non-compliance with the demands of the Temporary Investigative Commission of the Georgian Parliament." This offense is punishable by a fine, imprisonment for up to one year, and/or deprivation of the right to hold office or engage in certain activities for up to three years.
Gvaramia had been subject to a 30,000 GEL bail as a preventive measure, with a 50-day period to pay it. This period expired on June 7.
