PACE rapporteurs on Georgia express deep concern over the “ongoing repression against dissenting political voices” in the country. The statement was released by co-rapporteurs Edite Estrela (Portugal) and Sabina Ćudić (Bosnia and Herzegovina).
The co-rapporteurs condemned the summoning of journalists and political activists to court for allegedly “insulting ruling party officials on social media,” as well as the baseless and disproportionate legal measures, including the detention of opposition members who refuse to appear before a parliamentary investigative commission. This commission is said to examine actions committed by the “previous regime” and has openly declared its goal to ban political opposition in the country.
"The ongoing repressions will only worsen the social and political crisis in Georgia and distance the country further from fulfilling its obligations as a member of the Council of Europe. We call on the authorities to end the undemocratic repression of dissent in Georgian society and to reverse the country's rapid democratic backsliding. We remain ready to maintain an open and constructive dialogue with the authorities and all political forces to assist the country in fulfilling its obligations to the Council of Europe,” the rapporteurs stated.
