The Prosecutor's Office has issued a statement regarding the summoning of former Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri for questioning as part of the investigation ongoing into the Chorchana incident.
According to the agency, the Chorchana incident is being investigated as part of the investigation ongoing into the charges of sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravating circumstances, providing assistance to a foreign organization or an organization under foreign control in hostile activities, and mobilizing funds for activities directed against the constitutional order and foundations of national security of Georgia.
“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia is conducting an investigation into sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravating circumstances, assistance to the foreign organization or an organization under foreign control in hostile activities, and mobilization of funds for activities directed against the constitutional order and foundations of national security of Georgia, under Articles 318, Part 1, 19, 318, Part 2, Subparagraph “a” of Article 319 and 3211, Part 2 of Article 3211 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
The subject of the ongoing investigation, among other issues, is the action taken by the former Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia, along the occupation line near the village of Chorchana on August 24, 2019.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Vakhtang Gomelauri, who held the position of the Head of the State Security Service of Georgia as of August 2019, was summoned as a witness.
We would like to remind the public that the study of suspicious circumstances related to the Chorchana checkpoint is also underway in the format of the Temporary Investigative Commission of the Parliament of Georgia, where former Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia was present to provide explanations.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, and we will periodically provide the public with information about the progress of the investigation,” reads the statement.
