Iago Kachkachishvili: The research showed that opposition sentiments in Georgia, especially in Tbilisi, are high; however, the major challenge is how the opposition should make use of this advantage

The research showed that opposition sentiments in Georgia, especially in Tbilisi, are high — sociologist Iago Kachkachishvili stated this while assessing ISSA's study.

According to him, the fact that some opposition parties participate in local elections while others do not most seriously harms the possibility of gaining power in Tbilisi through elections.

"The research showed that opposition sentiments in Georgia — particularly in Tbilisi — are high. In Tbilisi, overall, the share of opposition-minded voters is approximately 66%, while support for Georgian Dream stands at about 25%. So, there is significantly stronger support for opposition political forces. However, a major challenge is how this advantage can be translated into real electoral tactics — that is, how the opposition can use its advantage over Georgian Dream to gain power in Tbilisi. This requires several conditions and serious prerequisites. Unfortunately, those prerequisites are not currently being met, and what is happening in Georgia today is more like pouring water on Georgian Dream’s project rather than helping the opposition’s cause.

Specifically, this zigzag movement — where some participate, others don’t, some boycott the elections while others support participating — this most seriously harms the chance of gaining power in Tbilisi through elections. Therefore, it is crucial that opposition forces find common ground in this regard — they must urge their voters to participate, agree on joint candidates for mayor and majoritarian seats. If this does not happen, even in Tbilisi, winning the election becomes very difficult,” said Iago Kachkachishvili.
