"In the security document, Russia has always been identified as the main threat to Georgia. You will see that Russia will no longer be considered a threat at all," said Giorgi Vashadze, leader of "Strategy Aghmashenebeli," in response to the government’s plan to liquidate the National Security Council.
Vashadze noted that this is a direct fulfillment of Russian interests and directives.
"National security is one of the most important issues. The Security Council exists to include various roles to balance and participate in making correct strategic decisions. When it is abolished, it means abandoning collectively ensured security, which is not dependent on a single person but on the participation of various agencies. Essentially, this is being sidelined. In the security document, Russia has always been the main threat to Georgia. This is the reality behind why this is happening. It is a direct fulfillment of Russian interests and directives. The Security Council deals with formalities, and its documents are public; we can see what is identified as a threat. You will see that Russia will no longer be considered a threat by Kobakhidze," Vashadze stated.
Regarding other issues, Vashadze also discussed local government elections, stating that he plans to meet with everyone to ensure a coordinated and unified decision.
"I intend to meet and talk with everyone to ensure we have a coordinated and unified decision regarding local government elections. These are not elections; elections have different standards. What we have here is everything but elections. This is the reality. There will be no observers, neither local nor international; they’ve changed the law and worsened the electoral system. Political opponents are in prison... I want us all to have a unified position, including on this issue," Vashadze said.
Additionally, Vashadze commented on the repeated summons of Giorgi Gakharia, leader of "For Georgia," to the parliamentary temporary investigative commission. He stated that the commission is a "clown show" and that Gakharia should decide for himself whether to attend.
"He should decide for himself whether to attend. I’ll say directly that this commission is a clown show, nothing more. Tsulukiani has completely ruined this commission and everything happening there. There’s nothing lawful about it; it’s become like a small group’s gossip session. If Tsulukiani had the courage to say something and wasn’t afraid of the public, she would come to court and justify her position. Why is she afraid to come to court? Why don’t they show up?" Vashadze noted.
For context, the National Security Council may be abolished as of September 1, 2025. The government has submitted a corresponding legislative proposal to the Parliament.
According to the Government Administration, following the council’s liquidation, its powers will be exercised by the Government of Georgia.
