Pawel Herczyński: Being a member of the European family is an opportunity, not an obligation. If Georgia returns to the path of democratic development, we are ready to work together for Georgia’s accession to the European Union

Georgia’s Eurointegration is on hold, and it is regrettable that the country may lose its historic chance to join the European Union for a long time. Moreover, Georgia’s democracy is once again under threat – being a member of the European family is an opportunity, not an obligation, – said the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczyński, during his speech at the Europe Day event held in Batumi.

According to him, if Georgia returns to the path of democratic development, the European Union is ready to help the country once again on its path to EU membership.

“Georgia and the European Union share a long history of successful partnership. This relationship has brought many benefits to the people of Georgia – look around and see what the EU has done in your villages and cities.

In 2023, the European Union opened the door to its European family and Georgia became an EU candidate country – we celebrated that historic moment together. Today, however, Georgia’s Eurointegration is on hold. It is unfortunate that Georgia may lose its historic opportunity to join the European Union for a long time. Moreover, Georgia’s democracy is again in danger.

Being a member of the European family is an opportunity, not an obligation. It is based on the sovereign choice of the people and the state. The reality is that EU membership means peace and prosperity! It means respecting the history, culture, and traditions of our countries – that is why we are together!

If Georgia returns to the path of democratic development, we are ready to work together for Georgia’s accession to the European Union. We are proud to be friends of Georgia.

Today, let us celebrate what unites us – with hope for a better future. Forward, Georgia! Forward!” – said Pawel Herczyński.
