PACE Vice-President: We must act on Georgia today if we do not want to see a second Belarus in the Caucasus

We must act on Georgia today if we do not want to see a second Belarus in the Caucasus, said Knut Abraham, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

According to Abraham, the arrests of opposition figures, the intimidation of the public, the beatings and detentions of demonstrators “sound very familiar” and “we can learn from our mistakes.

He called on the Committee of Ministers to respect the Council of Europe’s red lines and act immediately before it is too late.

“The arrest of opposition politicians, the intimidation of civil society and their imprisonment, the beating and imprisonment of demonstrators – all this sounds too familiar, it is a reality today in Russia and Belarus. For too long we have watched one repressive law after another being passed before it was too late, but we can learn from our mistakes. This is what we must do with Georgia if we do not want to have another Belarus in the Caucasus! Every day a new opposition politician is arrested in Georgia. As a member of the Council of Europe, Georgia has undertaken to respect human rights and protect democracy. I call on the Committee of Ministers to defend the Council of Europe’s red lines and act immediately before it is too late!”, Abraham said.
