One of the leaders of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Party), has responded to the arrests of opposition politicians in Georgia, stating that they deserve to be free.

"The prosecution and imprisonment of democratic opposition leaders in Georgia is not justice — it is repression. Badri Japaridze, Mamuka Khazaradze, Zurab Japaridze, Nika Melia, Nika Gvaramia, Irakli Okruashvili, and many others who have been detained deserve freedom — now," the senator wrote on social platform X.

For context, on June 24, the leader of "Strategy Aghmashenebeli," Giorgi Vashadze, was found guilty by the court for failing to comply with the request of a temporary parliamentary investigative commission. Judge Nino Galustashvili sentenced him to 7 months in prison and banned him from holding public office for 2 years. Vashadze was arrested at his party's office.

On the same charge, on June 23, two leaders of the "Strong Georgia" party — Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze — were also arrested. They were each sentenced to 8 months in prison and were likewise banned from holding public office for 2 years.

Also on June 23, the court sentenced Zurab “Girchi” Japaridze, one of the leaders of the "Coalition for Change," to 8 months in prison, with a 2-year ban on holding public office.
