“How is a Russian-run prison supposed to protect Givi Targamadze from Russians inside the prison?” — For years, Givi has been blamed for all sorts of things, yet in the end, he was sentenced over a Russian-style commission,” — writes Khatia Dekanoidze, one of the leaders of the United National Movement, in a social media post, responding to the 7-month prison sentence handed down to opposition politician Givi Targamadze for failing to appear at a session of the parliamentary investigative commission.

As she notes, “The 'Georgian Dream' are Russians.”

“How can a Russian prison protect Givi Targamadze from Russians inside the prison? A Hague witness from Georgia, who has been targeted by Russians for years. ‘Georgian Dream’ are Russians. For years, Givi has been accused of everything imaginable, yet in the end, he was sentenced over a Russian-style commission,” Dekanoidze writes.

As a reminder, opposition politician Givi Targamadze was found guilty by the court of failing to comply with the request of the Parliamentary Temporary Investigative Commission. Judge Nino Galustashvili sentenced him to 7 months in prison and banned him from holding public office for 2 years. Targamadze did not attend the hearing and did not use his right to make a final statement. He was summoned to appear before the commission on April 3 to provide an explanation but failed to show up. He was subsequently charged, and the court imposed bail in the amount of 10,000 GEL, which he paid within the legally established timeframe.

For reference, he was charged under Article 349 of the Criminal Code, which concerns “failure to comply with the request of the Parliamentary Temporary Investigative Commission.” The offense is punishable by a fine, up to one year of imprisonment, or the restriction of the right to hold office or engage in professional activity for up to three years.
