“It was a very serious, shocking, and devastating incident for everyone. Doctors are doing everything possible to preserve his health,” said Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze to journalists regarding the case of Tornike Rizhvadze, former chairman of the Government of Adjara.
According to Sarjveladze, Tornike Rizhvadze is currently in the intensive care unit of the University Clinic.
“As you know, Tornike Rizhvadze was admitted to a clinic in Sagarejo late at night. He suffered a severe injury — a gunshot wound. Accordingly, he underwent emergency interventions. A surgical operation was performed right there on site. All necessary procedures were carried out to restore vital parameters, and this was successfully accomplished. Afterward, a decision was made to transfer him here, to the First University Clinic. He is currently in the intensive care unit due to the severity of his injuries. Of course, he requires intensive treatment. Naturally, in such cases, preventive medical measures are essential. Everything necessary for saving his life and preserving his health is being done for Tornike Rijvadze — without exception. It was a very serious, shocking, and even devastating event for everyone. Doctors are doing everything they can to preserve his health.
The patient's condition is critical. This means he is under special care and observation. Special treatment is required to neutralize the existing risks and to ensure the recovery of his health,” said Mikheil Sarjveladze.
When asked how many wounds Tornike Rijvadze sustained, the minister responded that the former chairman of the Adjara Government had only one wound.
“There is one wound. Fortunately, only the lung was injured, and the gunshot did not affect other vital organs. At this moment, it is especially important that his condition is monitored with particular intensity and that all relevant medical measures are implemented, which is indeed being ensured.
As for the letter, I cannot speak on that with certainty. According to the information I’ve received, it was found in his clothing. That is all I can confirm at this time. Of course, it has been seized according to proper procedures, registered as evidence, and, accordingly, the public has been fully informed in line with the law,” Sarjveladze added.
For context: earlier this morning, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that Tornike Rizhvadze, the former chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic, had been admitted to “GeoHospitals” in Sagarejo with a gunshot wound to the chest. According to the ministry, he received emergency medical care. Doctors said his lung was damaged and his condition is critically stable. Later, he was transferred from Sagarejo to the First University Clinic.
According to available information, in connection with the case, Aleksi Akhvlediani has been detained as a suspect for negligent storage of a firearm.
