Next week, the EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation in Georgia, stated Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, during a speech at the European Parliament debate on Georgia.
According to her, "what we see in Georgia is far from what we expect from a candidate country."
"The democratic foundations of Georgia are being eroded day by day. The 'Georgian Dream' regime has launched severe repressions against the EU-supporting opposition and civil society. Over the past week, a significant number of opposition leaders have been detained. The government continues to adopt new repressive legislation, and its repressive actions contradict the values and principles of the European Union," said Marta Kos.
She noted that the EU must play a significant role in supporting civil society and independent media in Georgia.
"Currently, the Commission is implementing projects to support civil society through funding of over 46 million euros. An additional 32 million euros will become available after approval by member states. The latest repressive laws, particularly FARA, the law on grants, and amendments to the broadcasting law, negatively impact our ability to provide financial assistance," Marta Kos stated.
According to her, disinformation campaigns against the EU and its member states are unacceptable.
"To combat disinformation, we are strengthening our communication efforts, and in the fall, following approval by member states, an additional 7 million euros is planned to be allocated. The vast majority of the Georgian people support their country’s European future. We must continue our work and show the Georgian people that we stand by their side. Next week, the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation in Georgia, including possible further steps in response to the repressive actions of the 'Georgian Dream' government. In response to the current backsliding of democratic standards, all options must remain under consideration, while the possibility of engagement in interest-based policies beyond the enlargement framework should be maintained, including in the context of the Black Sea Strategy and regional connectivity," the Commissioner stated.
