The European Parliament reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional release of Mzia Amaghlobeli and for all charges against her, which are politically motivated, to be dropped — this is stated in the amendment to the resolution on Georgia that was approved by the European Parliament today.
The European Parliament expresses concern over the critical deterioration of Mzia Amaghlobeli’s eyesight and demands urgent access to reliable medical care.
"The European Parliament strongly condemns the ongoing and deliberate destruction of the environment for active civil society in Georgia through the adoption of several restrictive, Russian-style laws; it strongly condemns the new legislative initiative requiring all civil society organizations to register grants with the government and obliging foreign donors to obtain executive approval before issuing grants to local organizations; it regrets the recent decision by the authorities to freeze bank accounts of public fundraising initiatives and campaigns in support of political prisoners and their families; it calls on the authorities to immediately end intimidation, threats, politically motivated persecution, and physical violence against civil society representatives, political leaders, civic activists, journalists, and media workers in Georgia; it also condemns the arbitrary and unjustified refusal of entry to several European journalists," the document states.
As a reminder, the European Parliament adopted the resolution on Georgia with amendments by a vote of 490 in favor and 147 against.
