Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Poland supports the policy of EU High Representative Kaja Kallas regarding Georgia.
Sikorski expressed hope that the Georgian government will fulfill the promises it made during the elections rather than continuing its current actions.
According to him, he met with former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, who provided information about the persecution of the opposition in Georgia.
“I met with the former Prime Minister of Georgia, who informed me about the persecution of the opposition in that country. Poland has already shifted its focus from supporting the Georgian government’s European aspirations, as Georgia has clearly deviated from this path, to supporting its civil society. We are also exploring the possibility of imposing sanctions on those responsible for the persecution…
Poland supports the policy of the High Representative [Kaja Kallas] toward Georgia at this stage—to convince the Georgian government to stop persecuting the opposition. I met with a prime minister whose charges seem completely fabricated to me, and we support the Georgian society in its European aspirations. We hope that the Georgian government will do what it promised during the elections, rather than what it is doing now—a course that distances it from Europe,” Sikorski stated.
Furthermore, according to the Polish minister, he believes that restrictions should be imposed on those responsible for repressions, not on the Georgian people.
“I was born in communist Poland. It was an authoritarian regime, but during certain periods, we were allowed to travel abroad. At that time, we particularly valued countries like Austria, Sweden, and West Berlin, which provided us with visa-free access. This was a window to the world for us. So, we believe that restrictions should be imposed on those responsible for repressions, not on the Georgian people,” Sikorski stated.
