Kaja Kallas: The attack on democracy by ‘Georgian Dream’ is becoming increasingly severe—Georgia’s democratic backsliding will have consequences

Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that EU foreign ministers in Brussels assessed the issue of EU support for civil society in Georgia and discussed various options.

According to her, the attack on democracy by “Georgian Dream” is becoming increasingly severe. Kallas said that Georgia’s democratic backsliding will have consequences.

The EU High Representative noted that the ministers discussed various options, including the suspension of the visa-free regime, the suspension of the Association Agreement, and sanctions.

“Regarding Georgia: The attack on democracy by ‘Georgian Dream’ is becoming increasingly severe. Today, [EU] ministers assessed the EU’s support for civil society and discussed various options—what more we can do.

This includes the suspension of the visa-free regime, the suspension of the Association Agreement, and sanctions. Georgia’s democratic backsliding will have consequences,” Kallas stated.
