Prosecutor’s Office: A Georgian citizen attempted to sell uranium to a Turkish citizen for 3 million USD; Two individuals have been charged in connection with the case

The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has charged two individuals with the attempted illegal acquisition, storage, possession, and disposal of radioactive material.

This information was released by the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office.

According to their statement, an investigation conducted by the Counterintelligence Department of the State Security Service of Georgia established that a Georgian citizen illegally acquired and stored the radioactive substance uranium, which belongs to the category of nuclear materials and is hazardous to human health. The Georgian citizen attempted to sell the aforementioned nuclear material to a Turkish citizen for 3 million US dollars. Employees of the State Security Service detained both individuals.

“The detainees were charged under Article 230 of the Criminal Code (acquisition, storage, possession, and disposal of radioactive material), which provides for a penalty of up to 10 years of imprisonment.

The Prosecutor’s Office has already applied to the court to impose detention as a preventive measure for the accused.

The investigation into the criminal case is ongoing,” the released statement notes.
