Guram Macharashvili: It is not the business of the British Embassy to get involved in politics and internal affairs; this is an insult – even this statement shows that they are directly involved in political processes

It is not the embassy’s business to get involved in politics and internal state affairs. This is a direct insult – even this statement shows that they are directly engaged in political processes, which is not their role, – said the “People’s Power” MP Guram Macharashvili while commenting to journalists on the statement released by the British Embassy.

According to him, “when an embassy funds violent protests against the government and at the same time lectures the local authorities, it has nothing to do with European values.”

“The British Embassy must answer some questions. First, it should respond to the Georgian people and explain why it was funding organizations in Georgia that have been publicly exposed as participating in violent protests and revolutionary movements. They must also answer for the insulting statements they’ve made, which are direct interference in Georgia’s internal political affairs. Only after that can they claim the right to issue any kind of statement. Even this recent statement clearly shows they are directly involved in political processes, which is not their business. It is not the role of an embassy to interfere in politics or internal state matters. This is a direct insult. And we’re saying clearly: this is not a European value.

When you are an embassy and you fund violent protests against a government, and at the same time try to lecture a national government that has been elected by the people, this has absolutely nothing to do with European values. Unfortunately, the British Embassy must first answer these questions – only then can it make any comments,” – said Guram Macharashvili.

For context, the British Embassy in Georgia recently published a statement on social media, saying: “Unfortunately, Georgian Dream has distanced itself from Euro-Atlantic cooperation, while the threat from Russia still remains – including in cyberspace.”
