According to Mikheil Kavelashvili, his proposal regarding the pardoning of several opposition leaders still stands.
As Kavelashvili told journalists, the opposition does not really exist and “they are engaged in sabotage.”
“When I speak about institutions, the country’s development, stability, and peace, I recently had the opportunity to share my views with the public. What are we dealing with? When we need alternative, constructive thinking, it should come from the opposition. The role of the opposition should be to offer something better than the government, to present themselves more effectively to the public so that they have a chance to come to power. They must convince citizens that they can do better. But unfortunately, we don’t have a real opposition — they are engaged in sabotage.
In this case, I took a state-oriented approach. Several political parties decided to participate in the local elections. All of Georgia knows they acted deliberately, violated the law, and the state could not respond differently. A criminal must be punished, and that’s why they ended up behind bars. But this is a goodwill gesture. Once again — a goodwill gesture. It’s a political act in itself, meant to offer another chance to those citizens being convinced that these people are better — to allow them to fully participate in the elections.
This is an opportunity, if they choose to use it — that’s all it is. My offer still stands,” Kavelashvili stated.
