Prosecutor in Luka Kurtanidze’s case: The court fully accepted the circumstances outlined in our motion — there was a risk of influencing witnesses, as well as a risk of flight and committing a new crime

Due to the nature and intensity of the crime committed by the defendant during this time, there was a risk of committing a new offense — this is what prosecutor Davit Kirchkheli, handling the case of veteran athlete Luka Kurtanidze, said after the court hearing concluded.

According to the prosecutor, the judge fully accepted the circumstances presented in the prosecution's motion.

“The court fully accepted the circumstances outlined in the prosecution’s motion and imposed pretrial detention as a preventive measure. In our motion, we indicated that there was a risk of influencing witnesses, a risk of flight, and a risk of committing a new offense,” the prosecutor stated.

When asked whether an investigation is underway regarding obstruction of police and whether Luka Kurtanidze’s charges might be upgraded, the prosecutor replied that, in fact, the defendant did not resist the police and that his actions were directed not at the officers but at the victim.

“Kurtanidze did not physically engage with the police. Essentially, there was no resistance from the defendant toward law enforcement. What happened was that as he moved toward the victim, police officers intervened to prevent it. As witnesses explained, he slipped out of the police’s grasp. His actions were not directed at the police. An investigation was conducted, and both police officers and other witnesses were questioned. The defendant’s actions were aimed not at the police but at the victim,” the prosecutor said.

For context: Former “Georgian Dream” MP and veteran wrestler Luka Kurtanidze has been placed in pretrial detention as a preventive measure.

The Prosecutor’s Office has charged Kurtanidze with domestic violence, intentional damage to a family member’s property, and failure to comply with the terms and obligations set by a restraining order — charges that carry a sentence of up to five years in prison.
