National Environment Agency: At this time, the risk level in the Devdoraki Valley is minimal - water levels have returned to normal, and flash floods and mudflow processes are no longer observed - A recommendation to reopen the road has been issued

According to the National Environment Agency under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the risk level in the Devdoraki Valley is currently minimal—water levels have returned to their original state, and flash floods and mudflow processes are no longer observed. The agency has issued a recommendation to reopen the road.

The National Environment Agency reported that on July 31 of this year, the early warning system installed in the Devdoraki Valley detected mudflow processes. The system immediately transmitted an alert to the Lars border checkpoint, and road traffic was promptly restricted.

According to the agency’s statement, to assess additional risks, specialists from the National Environment Agency conducted an inspection of the Devdoraki-Amali Valley using drones and evaluated potential hazards.

“Abundant atmospheric precipitation caused the formation of mudflow streams in the tributaries of the Tergi River in the Kazbegi Municipality. Particularly notable are the Kuro and Chkheri valleys, as well as a high-density mudflow stream that developed in the right tributary of the Tergi River near the village of Tsdo, which temporarily blocked the Tergi River’s channel.

At this time, the blockage has been cleared and poses no threat to the valley. Additionally, a powerful mudflow stream passed through the Amali-Devdoraki riverbed, but it did not impact the infrastructure facilities in the Dariali Valley.

The effectiveness of such early warning systems has been tested and proven for valleys located near road infrastructure. This system allows for the restriction of road transport movement in the shortest possible time when necessary,” stated the information released by the National Environment Agency.
