Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains why Georgia is not invited to the September meeting of EU ministers, where representatives of Ukraine, Moldova, the Western Balkan countries and Turkey will be present

The Georgian government has decided to suspend the country’s EU integration process until 2028 - Denmark, as the country holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union, will not invite Georgia in the capacity as candidate country to the meeting scheduled for September, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed InterpressNews in writing, thus answering the agency's question about why Georgia is not invited to the meeting of European Affairs Ministers of the 27 EU member states in Denmark on September 1-2, which will be attended by representatives of Ukraine, Moldova, the Western Balkan countries and Turkey.

According to the Danish Foreign Ministry, Denmark will follow the precedent set by the Polish Presidency.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark states: “In November 2024, the Georgian government declared that it had decided to suspend the country’s EU integration process until 2028. The EU has taken note of that. The Danish Presidency will follow the precedent set by the Polish Presidency and, as a general rule, not invite Georgia in the capacity as candidate country,” the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

For information, the European Affairs Ministers of the 27 EU member states, along with representatives of Ukraine, Moldova, the Western Balkans and Turkey, will meet for an informal meeting on September 1-2. The main topic of the meeting will be various aspects of EU enlargement.

The leaders’ meeting will be held in Denmark. According to the information published on the European Council website, the first working session will be dedicated to the importance of the Copenhagen criteria and will be attended by Ukraine, Moldova, the Western Balkan partners and Turkey.

During the second working session, ministers from the EU member states will discuss strengthening the EU's rule of law instruments.

Georgia is not mentioned in the information published on the European Council website.
