Verdict in Giorgi Akhobadze’s case to be announced on August 6

The verdict in the case of doctor Giorgi Akhobadze, accused of a drug-related crime, will be announced tomorrow, August 6. The hearing is scheduled at Tbilisi City Court at 4:00 PM.

Judge Romeo Tkheshelashvili, who was supposed to deliver the verdict on July 25, unexpectedly postponed the session.

After a week of deliberation, Tkheshelashvili will announce the verdict tomorrow.

At the previous hearing, the accused, Giorgi Akhobadze, made use of his final statement.

According to the position of Akhobadze and the defense, he did not possess any narcotic substances, and they were “planted” by law enforcement officers. Additionally, they claim that a saliva sample taken from Akhobadze’s oral cavity was used to contaminate the narcotic substance.

“The search was not recorded, and now they are trying to prove that [the drug] belonged to me... If you touch an object, it should leave DNA traces, but the traces were fabricated. The presence of my fingerprints on it would have been objective evidence.

The investigation did not conduct a drug test on me because they knew I was not a drug user, and their setup would have been exposed,” Akhobadze stated in his final remarks.

For reference, doctor Giorgi Akhobadze was detained on December 7 while returning home from a protest rally held on Rustaveli Avenue.

He was charged under Article 260, Part 6 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the illegal acquisition and possession of a large quantity of narcotic substances.

This crime carries a penalty of 8 to 20 years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.
