17 years ago, Russia launched a war against Georgia - another stage in Russia's imperial wars, - the chairman of the Estonian parliament's foreign affairs committee, Marko Mihkelson, has issued a statement on the 17th anniversary of Russia's aggression against Georgia.
"17 years ago today, Russia launched a war against Georgia, which ended with the occupation of one-fifth of its territory and the halting of NATO expansion. This was yet another stage in Russia's imperial wars that began in the early 1990s, which ended successfully for the Kremlin and laid the groundwork for the attack on Ukraine," - Marko Mikhelsson writes on X.
It has been 17 years since the August war. In the August 2008 Russian-Georgian war, 170 employees of the Georgian Ministry of Defense, 14 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and 224 civilians were killed. The total number of wounded and injured civilians and military personnel is 2,232, including 1,045 military personnel.
