Petras Austrevicius: Those in charge of changed political course of Georgia must bear consequences - time for statements is over

Those in charge of changed political course of Georgia must bear consequences, says MEP Petras Austrevicius, responding to the two-year prison sentence of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti.

“Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli was sentenced for two years for allegedly assaulting a police officer. Those in charge of changed political course of Georgia - nondemocrtic, not European, repressive against civil society must bear consequences. Time for statements is over”, he writes on X.

Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, was sentenced to 2 years in prison. The judge replaced the charge under Article 353/1, Part 1 of the Criminal Code with Article 353, Part 1. This includes resisting a police officer, a special penitentiary service employee, or another government official with the aim of obstructing the maintenance of public order, terminating or changing his activities. The punishment for this act is a fine, house arrest for a term of up to 2 years, and imprisonment for a term of 2 to 6 years.
