Court leaves activist Nino Datashvili in pre-trial detention

Activist Nino Datashvili, who was arrested on charges of assaulting a bailiff, remains in custody. The decision was made by Tbilisi City Court Judge Lela Kalichenko.

During today's trial, the admissibility of evidence was discussed, and the measure of pre-trial detention imposed on the detainee was also reviewed and remained in force.

The prosecutor requested that the pre-trial detention imposed on Datashvili remain in force, since the there was still a risk of the accused absconding, influencing witnesses, and committing new crimes.

The defense did not agree with the motion. The lawyers requested that Datashvili be released. In particular, human rights activists said that there was no threat of Datashvili influencing witnesses, committing new crimes, or absconding. According to the lawyers, Datashvili was arrested almost 10 days after the indictment was filed, and she did not attempt to abscond.

Judge Lela Kalichenko agreed with the prosecutor's motion.

For information, Nino Datashvili was arrested on June 20 in Tbilisi City Court for the incident that occurred on June 9. She was charged under Part 3 of Article 353 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to assault on a public servant while performing his official duties.

The crime is punished by a fine or imprisonment for a term of 4 to 7 years.
