Media: According to the Danish Foreign Ministry, there was no point in inviting Georgia to the meeting of European Affairs Ministers

After Georgia announced in 2024 that it was halting its EU integration process, there was no point in inviting it to Copenhagen for the meeting of European Affairs Ministers from EU countries and representatives of candidate countries, according to the Ukrainian publication European Pravda, citing a statement from the Danish Foreign Ministry, the EU presidency country.

“On November 28, 2024, the Georgian government announced its decision to suspend the country’s EU integration process until 2028. In this context, the Danish presidency considers that there is no point in inviting Georgia, as an EU candidate country, to ministerial meetings,” the Danish Foreign Ministry explained to the publication.

According to European Pravda, the Danish presidency clarified that “Georgia’s EU integration process has effectively been suspended following the June 2024 meeting of EU heads of state and government, due to actions by the Georgian government that, unfortunately, have led to a serious democratic backslide in the country.”

For reference, a meeting of European Affairs Ministers from EU member states was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 1-2, attended by representatives of candidate countries. Georgia was not invited to the meeting.
