The European Commission is still assessing the actions of the Georgian government and its response to the EU’s demands to return to democratic practices, and if it turns out that Georgia is not complying with the EU’s recommendations, it may activate the visa suspension mechanism, a European Commission representative told the Evropeiskaya Pravda correspondent.
According to him, the European Commission is carefully studying the actions of the Georgian government and, if necessary, may decide to activate the visa suspension mechanism.
“On August 31, the Georgian authorities responded to the letter sent by the Commission to the Georgian Ambassador in Brussels on July 14. The Commission is currently assessing the response sent by Georgia. The Commission will assess the measures taken and their compliance with the recommendations in the context of the next report on visa suspension,” the European Commission representative said.
He said Brussels still expects the Georgian authorities to “take concrete measures to address all the issues raised in the Commission’s recommendations.”
“In the event of continued non-compliance and following an assessment, the Commission may decide to activate the visa suspension mechanism,” the European Commission representative said.
He said that last week, the Georgian authorities took another step against democracy in the country by freezing the bank accounts of independent civil society organizations.
“This is yet another attack on fundamental rights and the use of the judiciary as an instrument of repression. The EU calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately reverse this decision,” the European Commission representative said.
