Levan Natroshvili: They were interested in what our role was, whether we participated in the protests, whether we organized them, whether we bought anything - it is unclear what they are investigating

They were interested in what our role was, whether we participated in the protests, whether we organized them, whether we bought anything, - ISFED director Levan Natroshvili said after being questioned in the presence of a magistrate judge at the Tbilisi City Court.

According to Natroshvili, the Prosecutor's Office is trying to justify the seizure of the accounts of civil organizations through this investigation.

“They asked me the same questions that they asked the leaders of other organizations. They were interested in what our role was, whether we participated in protests, whether we organized them, whether we bought anything. I think this investigation is completely absurd. The statement that the Prosecutor’s Office made is completely unfounded. It is unclear what they are investigating at all. Of course, we have not violated the law, we have not called on anyone to take any violent action, we have not organized a rally that concerns any specific violation of the law, and therefore, I think this is another step to ensure that civil organizations are no longer in Georgia, no longer work, no longer help people. This is the goal of this investigation, the step that was taken, the seizure of our accounts, must be justified in some way. Unfortunately, the Prosecutor’s Office is struggling to get something out of this case,” said Levan Natroshvili.

For information, on August 27, the Prosecutor's Office released information stating that the Tbilisi City Court had granted the Prosecutor's Office's motion to seize the bank accounts of the the Civil Society Foundation, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), Defenders of Democracy, Georgia’s Democratic Initiative (GDI), Sapari, and the Social Justice Center.

According to the statement issued by the Prosecutor’s Office, the case concerns an investigation ongoing into allegations of sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravating circumstances, aiding hostile activities by a foreign organization or an organization under foreign control, and mobilizing finances for activities aimed against Georgia’s constitutional order and national security.
