Security Service: We are working to establish whether there is a connection between the detention of Ukrainian citizens and the plans of radical groups announced for October 4 - Tbilisi appears to be the only final destination for the explosives
Along with other versions of the investigation, active work is underway to establish whether there is a connection between the illegal purchase and storage of explosives, the detention of Ukrainian citizens, and the October 4 elections and the plans announced by radical groups in connection with them, - Deputy Head of the State Security Service, Lasha Maghradze, stated at the briefing held today at the State Security Service, where he provided the public with information about new details of the investigation ongoing into the fact of explosives imported into Georgia from Ukraine.
As he noted, the only final location of the explosives appears to be Tbilisi, one of the residential buildings located in the Avlabari area.
"As you know, two Ukrainian citizens have been detained, who were found to be in possession of 2.4 kilograms of the explosive "Hexogen". The substance entered Georgia via Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. A number of additional investigative and operational actions were carried out within a day and a half of the arrest of the accused, from which it is established that the driver of the Mercedes truck was given an explosive substance on the territory of Ukraine by employees of the Ukrainian special service, the so-called "SBU", which is also confirmed by the testimony of one of the detainees, who was told that he was to bring this substance to the territory of Georgia and hand it over to a specific person indicated by them.
Although the detainee indicates in his testimony about the final destination of the explosive substance, that it was to arrive in the Russian Federation and, according to him, the so-called "Pautina 2" was to be arranged there, the investigation and other operational materials at this stage show the only final destination, one of the residential buildings located in the Avlabari area of Tbilisi. That is why, along with other versions of the investigation, active work is underway to establish whether there is a connection between the above-mentioned fact and the October 4 elections and the plans announced by radical groups in connection with it. The State Security Service continues to inform the public about this case, as we believe that making public the part of the information that Georgian special services can disclose is important for the preventive purposes of the country's security," said Maghradze.
