Lawyer: We will appeal the decision on the imposition of pre-trial detention on Juansher Burchuladze to the Court of Appeal

According to Mariam Shatirishvili, the lawyer of former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze, they will appeal the decision of the City Court on the imposition of pre-trial detention on Juansher Burchuladze to the Court of Appeal.

According to her, they have a legal chance to achieve a result.

“Our first plan is to appeal the ruling on the preventive measure through an appeal. We believe that in the form in which it happened, the imposition of a preventive measure on the basis of a weak petition - we have a chance to achieve some result. We will appeal on Monday by the end of the day,” Mariam Shatirishvili noted.

According to the prosecutor's office, Juansher Burchuladze abused his official position in 2023, with the help of his deputy, a relative, and the former head of the Procurement Department of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia. Namely, he supplied medical equipment to a military hospital for GEL 3,940,000 instead of GEL 2,606,272, as a result of which the ministry suffered property damage of GEL 1,333,728.

In March 2025, Juansher Burchuladze and his wife purchased property in Spain for GEL 544,000. In order to hide and disguise the origin of the aforementioned, to give this property a legal appearance, they signed a fictitious purchase agreement with a third party for real estate located in the Tskneti settlement.

The former Minister of Defense is accused of legalizing illegal and unsubstantiated income in the amount of 1,593,212 GEL in total. Juansher Burchuladze was charged under Article 194, Part 3, Subparagraph “c” and Article 332, Part 2 of the Criminal Code, which implies abuse of official authority and legalization of illegal income by a person holding a state-political position. The aforementioned act provides for a term of imprisonment of 9 to 12 years.
