Court applies pre-trial detention against Zurab Zviadauri

Court has applied the measure of pre-trial detention against Olympic champion Zurab Zviadauri, who was arrested for the illegal purchase, storage and carrying of firearms and ammunition.

The decision was made by Judge Davit Kurtanidze of the Tbilisi City Court.

The prosecutor's office requested the use of the most severe preventive measure of detention.

According to Prosecutor Irakli Kvavadze, there is an increased risk of the defendant committing a new crime. The prosecutor also spoke about the dangers of destroying evidence, influencing witnesses and absconding.

According to Kvavadze, the accused was on bail for a particularly serious crime, which was also committed with a firearm, at which time he committed a new crime.

According to the prosecutor, two firearms were seized in the case, one of which had been registered, and the other had not been registered. Accordingly, it is necessary to establish where and under what circumstances Zviadauri acquired the weapon.

For information, Zurab Zviadauri was arrested by law enforcement officers on September 16, 2025. He was charged under the third and fourth parts of Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to the illegal acquisition, storage and carrying of firearms and ammunition. The aforementioned act provides for imprisonment for a term of 4 to 7 years.

In addition, Zurab Zviadauri also has the status of a defendant in a murder case that occurred years ago. In particular, on August 16, 2021, five people were injured during a shootout in the village of Tsinandali, three of whom died. One of the deceased was Zurab Zviadauri's brother, Zviad Zviadauri.

In connection with the incident, law enforcement officers arrested Zurab Zviadauri on charges of murder, and another person, Jaba Jangirashvili, on charges of careless possession of a weapon.

The Telavi District Court released Zurab Zviadauri from the courtroom on bail of 50,000 GEL, and Jaba Jangirashvili on bail of 5,000 GEL.

The verdict in the case has not yet been handed down. Zviadauri chose a jury, and the process of selecting them is still ongoing.
