The MIA has arrested members of the "National Movement" – Murtaz Zodelava and Irakli Nadiradze; Paata Burchuladze, one of the leaders of the "Rustaveli Avenue" movement; Paata Manjgaladze, one of the leaders of the "Strategy Aghmashenebeli" party; and Colonel Lasha Beridze.
The corresponding statement was made by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze during a briefing.
According to the Deputy Minister, they are charged with "inciting the violent overthrow of Georgia's constitutional order or the toppling of the state government, as well as organizing, leading, and participating in group violence."
The offenses carry a prison sentence of up to nine years.
"Based on evidence obtained by law enforcement officers, as well as the analysis of video footage disseminated by various media outlets, it has been established that during the rally on Freedom Square, calls of a violent nature were made by the organizers. Such calls were voiced even before October 4 of this year.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs issued multiple appeals to the rally participants to ensure that the assembly-manifestation remained peaceful and did not exceed the limits established by law. However, following the violent calls announced at the protest rally, several participants and organizers dismantled the fences around the President's residence located on Atoneli Street and attempted to seize the President's residence.
The investigation is being conducted under Articles 317, 222, 225, and 187 of the Criminal Code. Information about the investigation results and new details will be provided to the public in stages," Darakhvelidze stated.
As is known, "National Movement" members Murtaz Zodelava and Irakli Nadiradze were detained on Rustaveli Avenue, while Paata Burchuladze was detained in the Helsicor Clinic.
It should be recalled that all five detainees are members of the "October 4 Rally Organizational Committee," which Paata Burchuladze named today.
