Elina Valtonen: Georgia has more political prisoners per capita than Russia, this is not a European path

Georgia has more political prisoners per capita than Russia, which sends a very strong signal to all of us, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told reporters before the meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers.

She said the current situation in Georgia is very concerning.

“I have just returned from the South Caucasus and unfortunately what I have seen in Georgia is very, very worrying. Repression on the streets against ordinary people is something that is unacceptable. Georgia has more political prisoners per capita than Russia, which sends a very strong signal to all of us. Of course, this is not a European path, but it is not a path that the Georgian people have chosen either. So we need to be firm in this regard as well,” the Finnish Foreign Minister noted.
