According to Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the measures that Georgian Government is taking against free media, against civil society, against the protesters, goes against all the rules and principles that we value in the European Union.
When asked by a Formula journalist whether the EU would still consider Georgia as a candidate country, "in the light of political repression, political prisoners, repression against the media and civil society", Kajia Kallas replied that "these issues were brought up by the member states at the meeting".
"The room for civil society and journalists is indeed shrinking. The measures that the Georgian government is taking against free media, civil society and protesters goes all the rules and principles that we value in the European Union. As for the question of Georgia's candidate status for EU membership, with these measures it is impossible to consider that it will be the case, because this is going totally in another direction than what Europe represents," said Kallas.
