Mzia Amaglobeli wins Sakharov Prize

Imprisoned journalists Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Netgazeti and Batumelebi, and Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut have been awarded the 2025 Sakharov Prize.

As European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said when announcing the winners, “the courage of Andrzej Poczobut and Mzia Amaglobeli shines like a beacon for all who refuse to be silenced.”

The prize winners will receive 50,000 euros. The award ceremony will be held in Strasbourg on 16 December.

The Sakharov Prize was established by the European Parliament in 1988. The prize is awarded annually for outstanding contributions to the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, development of democracy and the rule of law, respect for international law and protection of minority rights.
