Guram Macharashvili: Political persecution is when someone is oppressed, physically assaulted, not allowed to speak in Parliament, or prevented from entering the City Council. In our case, it’s the opposite — we were telling them to go to Parliament, to the City Council — so it cannot be called persecution

The "National Movement" and its branches performed whatever "harakiri" they did over these recent years and got the results they deserved - when you're elected to Parliament and you yourself refuse to enter, what political persecution are we talking about?! Who are they fooling at all?! - "People's Power" deputy Guram Macharashvili stated this to journalists, responding to the constitutional lawsuit filed by "Georgian Dream" in the Constitutional Court regarding the banning of parties.

According to him, representatives of the "National Movement" and "its branches" were telling the public that "if foreign forces say so - they will stand on one leg, hand over sovereignty to Brussels, insult traditions, curse the church," etc.

"There is such a saying - 'if a person doesn't want good for themselves, no one can force them.' Accordingly, whatever 'harakiri' the 'National Movement' and its branches performed over these recent years, they got those results. We told them more than once: criticize the government as much as you want, but stop the radicalism, harming the country, damaging statements, and agent activities. Not only did they not stop, but they publicly admitted that yes, they are proud to be representatives of foreign countries and foreign forces in Georgia. I'll tell you more: they are proud to tell the public that if foreign forces say so, they will stand on one leg; if foreign forces say so, they will hand over sovereignty to Brussels; if foreign forces say so, they will insult traditions, curse the church, and so on. This is 'harakiri,' not just political. Their defeat stems from this. What political persecution are they talking about?! Who are they fooling at all?! When you're elected to Parliament and you yourself refuse to enter, what political persecution is there?! Political persecution happens when they narrow you down, blackmail you, physically confront you, assault you, don't let you speak in Parliament, don't allow you into the city council, etc. We were telling them the opposite: enter Parliament, enter the city council. They themselves refuse everything, so there can be no talk of political persecution here," Macharashvili stated.

For reference, "Georgian Dream" filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court demanding the banning of 3 opposition parties. With the prepared constitutional lawsuit, the ruling party demands that the following parties be declared unconstitutional and banned: "National Movement," the "Ahali" party, and "Strong Georgia-Lelo."
