Activist Mariam Mekanwshvili starts a hunger strike

Activist Mariam Mekanwshvili is starting a hunger strike. As she writes on social media, she will continue this extreme form of protest until the 71-year-old Aza Chilachava, an IDP from Abkhazia who was detained yesterday, is released.

“I am joining Mrs. Aza and starting a hunger strike together with her! I will continue until she is freed from captivity! Return Grandma Aza to us,” Mekanwshvili writes.

For context, Aza Chilachava was administratively detained by law enforcement yesterday. She is accused of artificially blocking the road. It later became known that she had started a dry hunger strike. Chilachava had previously been held administratively liable, but at that time she was given only a verbal warning.
