Zurab Menteshashvili has been formally charged for the second blocking of Rustaveli Avenue - The Prosecutor’s Office will ask the court to remand him in custody

Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office has charged activist Zurab Menteshashvili with violating the rules for holding assemblies. The Office has released the following information.

According to the Interior Ministry investigation,

  • on 25 October the Tbilisi City Court’s Administrative Cases Board had already imposed an administrative penalty on the person for artificially blocking a road;
  • on 31 October he was again at the protest near the Parliament of Georgia, with his face covered, artificially blocking the roadway when the small number of people made it unnecessary.

Law-enforcement officers arrested the accused on 1 November. He was charged under Part 1 of Article 347 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

The Prosecutor’s Office will apply to the court for the use of pre-trial detention as a measure of restraint within the statutory time limit.
