Kaja Kallas: At this stage, Georgia does not have a viable path to the EU - we have been trying to impose sanctions on government officials who use violence against peaceful protesters

Georgia does not have a viable path to the European Union, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said at the press conference in Brussels.

At the presentation of the EU enlargement package, Kaja Kallas said that Georgia is now a candidate country in name only.

“At this stage, Georgia does not have a viable path to the European Union unless conditions change dramatically. It is now a candidate country in name only,” Kallas noted.

She also responded to a question from Euroscope editor Tamar Nutsubidze.

“As you know, we have been trying to put sanctions on those government officials who are using violence against peaceful protesters in Georgia.

So far, we don't have everybody on board when it comes to member states, but we keep working on finding different ways to address these issues,” Kalas noted.
