Poet Paata Shamugia’s lawyer: He admits he stepped onto the roadway; that was his protest, and he wanted to express it exactly this way

Some of the people administratively detained during the protest on Rustaveli Avenue have been transferred to the Tbilisi Police Headquarters.

One of them, poet Paata Shamugia, was visited at dawn by his lawyer, Viktor Kvitatians.

The court will today decide on administrative penalties for the detainees.

“I visited Paata Shamugia at dawn. He has been moved to the Digomi isolator, where he was placed at 03:00. As usual, he is charged with blocking the roadway on Rustaveli Avenue—an offence that carries up to 15 days in jail. Paata Shamugia openly admits that he did indeed step onto the roadway; that was his protest, and he chose this exact form to express it. Accordingly, he does not regard the act as a violation of the law and believes he exercised his protest within constitutional bounds. He is not denying the action; on the contrary, he says: ‘Yes, I stepped out—that was my protest,’” Kvitatians stated.

Paata Shamugia was detained last night at Freedom Square metro station.
