Maka Bochorishvili: The conclusions drawn in the European Commission’s report are completely disconnected from the actual facts

“It is shameful when someone accuses Georgia of lying in relation to Ukraine. Since February 2022, Georgia has done everything to consistently express political support for Ukraine — this support from Georgia has always been there,” said Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili, in a conversation with journalists.

According to the Minister, no one can claim that Georgia has failed to support Ukraine in international formats.

Bochorishvili stated that “the conclusions drawn in the European Commission’s report are completely disconnected from the actual facts.”

“It is shameful when someone accuses Georgia of lying regarding Ukraine. Since February 2022, Georgia has done everything to consistently express political support for Ukraine, and this support continues. It has never been the case, and no one can say, that Georgia has failed to support Ukraine in international formats. In areas where we have a very clearly defined policy, the same policy exists in any EU member state, and even more so in NATO member states. No one wants to confront Russia or create additional security challenges — this is very natural. The primary duty of a government is to protect the country from threats. This is our obligation, and if we do this, it should certainly not be condemned; it should be welcomed,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

She also noted that Ukraine is not a member of the European Union and therefore cannot make any claims regarding Georgia’s EU integration process.

“On the path of Georgia’s integration into the EU and the process of obtaining candidate status, Ukraine’s negative stance was somehow present, opposing Georgia’s receipt of candidate status. We saw firsthand the campaigns that took place in 2022–2023 before we received candidate status, and Ukraine’s involvement in this was evident — they opposed Georgia’s European integration in various ways. This was not hidden; everyone knows. Today, Ukraine is not an EU member, and therefore it cannot make any claims regarding Georgia’s EU integration process,” said the Minister.

Maka Bochorishvili also spoke about statements made by the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, noting that his statements are fully aligned with those of Kaia Kalas and Marta Kos.

“An ambassador cannot make statements that contradict those of the Head of the EU External Action Service. Unfortunately, from Brussels, we saw a single statement that deliberately distorted the facts of what happened in Georgia on October 4, creating false perceptions and conclusions regarding Georgia. Therefore, expectations that the ambassador would make a different statement should be limited. His statements are fully aligned with those of Kaia Kalas and Marta Kosi,” said Maka Bochorishvili.
