Nikoloz Samkharadze: The fact that Georgia was not invited to the EU enlargement summit is a continuation of Brussels’ existing policy

“It is clear that Brussels has a policy of avoiding dialogue with the Government of Georgia. I believe this is a very harmful, ill-considered, and illogical policy; however, I want to hope that it will change soon,” – said Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, in a comment to journalists.

According to Samkharadze, if Brussels truly has a sincere interest in seeing Georgia and the Georgian people as part of the European family, it must engage in dialogue with the government elected by the Georgian people.

He noted that the fact Georgia was not invited to the EU enlargement summit is part of the same ongoing approach by Brussels.

“The fact that Georgia was not invited is a continuation of the policy Brussels has pursued. I remind you that Georgia was also not invited to the Black Sea Connectivity Summit, whose main theme was connecting Europe to Central Asia through the Caucasus. When Georgia is excluded from such an event, it’s unclear how they plan to connect to Central Asia via the Caucasus without involving Georgia.

So it’s evident that Brussels follows a policy of not maintaining dialogue with the Government of Georgia. I consider this to be a very harmful, unwise, and illogical policy on Brussels’ part. However, I also hope that this approach will soon change, because if they genuinely wish to see Georgia and the Georgian people as part of the European family, they must speak with the government chosen by the Georgian people,” – said Samkharadze.
