The Ministry of Internal Affairs has drafted legislative changes to regulate the circulation of acoustic weapons, electroshock devices, and gas aerosol devices. The information was released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to the ministry, the document has already been submitted to the legislative body.

“For even more effective protection of public safety and law and order, and for crime prevention, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has drafted legislative amendments regulating the circulation of acoustic weapons, electroshock devices, and gas aerosol devices.

The document has already been submitted to the legislative body. According to the proposed amendments: sound (acoustic) weapons that are constructed solely for firing sound (blank) cartridges and are used in theatrical performances, film screenings, television productions, historical reenactments, parades, and sporting events will require a permit for import into Georgia.

A citizen will be able to purchase a sound (acoustic) weapon only after presenting prior written consent (a certificate) from the territorial unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In addition, the existing regulations remain in force, according to which the transportation, shipment, or delivery of sound (acoustic) weapons is allowed only with police authorization. Furthermore, the police will be given the authority to impose restrictions on the purchase of acoustic weapons, both in terms of quantity and purchase frequency.

The import of gas aerosol devices (pepper spray) will require a permit. Pepper spray may be purchased by individuals over the age of 18, based on written consent (a certificate) issued by the territorial unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In addition, electroshock devices will be prohibited from civilian circulation. Only administrative bodies or private security organizations will be allowed to import and use electroshock devices for the purpose of fulfilling their authority,” the statement reads.
